A Day of Locomotion
Arrival Times:
The gymnasium will be open at 11:00 am on Tuesday for those of you who would like to set up your poster before the workshop and/or load your soundbite onto our computers.
We encourage all participants to arrive prior to 12:45 to allow time to pick up your name tag and program.
*** CHANGE OF VENUE ***
Thanks to all of you who have pre-registered for the workshop. We have had such a positive and overwhelming response that we are moving the event to a larger venue (updated posters available below). The new location will be:
Location and directions:
Radcliffe Gymnasium, Radcliffe Yard, (Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University). (Maps and directions)

Parking:
Unfortunately parking is neither fun nor easy in Harvard Square. If possible it is almost always easier to take the T in. If it is necessary to drive, parking information is available here.
General Information:
We are pleased to announce “A Day of Locomotion,” to be held at Harvard University on Tuesday October 16, 2007. The workshop will include a number of talks on biological locomotion and will culminate in a panel discussion on Grand Challenges in the field.
One of the primary goals of the workshop is to facilitate the formation of new interdisciplinary collaborations. To this end a large part of the workshop will be dedicated to posters and soundbites providing a broad overview of locomotion activities in the New England area.
Updated workshop information will be posted at this site as it becomes available.
Confirmed Speakers: (click here for abstracts)
- Eric Lauga (UCSD) — Swimming on Small Scales
- Andy Ruina (Cornell University) — Bipedal Locomotion
- Steve Vogel (Duke University) — Bioballistics: An Exercise in Scaling
- Jane Wang (Cornell University) — Insect Flight: Aerodynamics, Optimization, and Evolution
Confirmed Panelists:
- Howard Berg — Harvard University, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology/Department of Physics
- Andy Biewener — Harvard University, Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology
- George Lauder — Harvard University, Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology
- L. Mahadevan — Harvard University, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Posters and soundbites: We strongly encourage attendees to present a poster and soundbite. Soundbites will serve as an opportunity to briefly introduce and/or summarize the content of your poster. If you would like to present a poster and soundbite, please email your name, affiliation, title and abstract to Debbie Blanchard (drblnc@mit.edu). Please include Locomotion 07 – POSTER in the subject line of the email.
Deadline to submit poster abstracts: October 1, 2007
Regisration: There is no registration fee but if you plan to attend, we ask that you register ahead of time by sending your name and affiliation to Kate Zirpolo (kzirpolo@deas.harvard.edu). Please include Locomotion 07 – REGISTRATION in the subject line of your email.
Schedule:
- 12:45-1:00 Welcome (Howard Stone)
- 1:00-1:30 Eric Lauga: “Swimming on Small Scales”
- 1:30-2:00 Steve Vogel: “Bioballistics: An Exercise in Scaling”
- 2:00-3:00 Soundbites
- 3:00-4:00 Posters and Coffee
- 4:00-4:30 Jane Wang: “Insect Flight: Aerodynamics, Optimization and Evolution”
- 4:30-5:00 Andy Ruina: “Bipedal Locomotion”
- 5:00-6:00 Panel Discussion (Panelists: Howard Berg, Andy Biewener, L. Mahadevan, and George Lauder; Moderator: Peko Hosoi)
eForum: This blog will remain up after the workshop to facilitate continued online discussions. We hope that this eForum will be used by the community to post questions and answers; preprints, images and videos; and meeting announcements related to locomotion. For instructions on posting to the eForum, click here.
Please Post:

I think that many of the most important problems in locomotion are at the interface between neurobiology and biomechanics. These are also interdisciplinary and might be considered. The neurobiologists talk to each other and, based on this meeting, so do the biomechanics folks. Perhaps someone needs to unite the two.

Hi all -
Perhaps I have missed it, but what time is this event? And what is the schedule?
Thank you!

Hi Angie,
Good question! I will post the schedule as soon as we know how many posters/soundbites to expect. The workshop should run approximately 1:30-5:30 (details to follow).
